Sales Tax in the US — What You Need to Know

Sales tax is a consumption tax imposed by state and local governments on the sale of goods and some services. Unlike VAT systems used in Europe, US sales tax is added at the point of sale and not embedded in the price. Rates vary widely — from 0% to over 10% — and can differ even within a state due to county and city taxes.

No-Sales-Tax States

  • Oregon — No statewide or local sales tax
  • Montana — No sales tax except a few resort areas
  • New Hampshire — No general sales tax (meals & rooms taxed)
  • Delaware — No sales tax (has gross receipts tax on businesses)
  • Alaska — No statewide tax; some municipalities charge up to 7.5%

Highest Combined Rates (State + Local)

  • Louisiana ~9.55% · Tennessee ~9.55% · Arkansas ~9.45%
  • Washington ~9.38% · Alabama ~9.29% · Oklahoma ~8.99%
  • Illinois ~8.86% · Kansas ~8.68% · New York City ~8.875%
How do I calculate sales tax?+
Forward: Tax = Price × Rate. Total = Price + Tax. Example: $50 item at 8% = $4 tax = $54 total.

Reverse: If you know the total and want the pre-tax price, divide by (1 + rate). Example: $54 total at 8% → $54 ÷ 1.08 = $50 pre-tax.
Is sales tax included in the advertised price?+
In most US states, no — advertised prices are pre-tax and the sales tax is added at checkout. This is different from most other countries where prices include VAT. Notable exceptions: some gas stations show tax-inclusive pump prices, and Hawaii's GET (General Excise Tax) is often built into prices.
What items are exempt from sales tax?+
Exemptions vary by state but commonly include: groceries (food for home preparation), prescription drugs, medical devices, and certain agricultural products. Some states exempt clothing under a certain price. During "tax holidays," states temporarily remove sales tax on school supplies, clothing, and sometimes appliances or emergency preparedness items.
Do I pay sales tax on online purchases?+
Yes, in most cases. After the 2018 South Dakota v. Wayfair Supreme Court ruling, states can require online retailers to collect sales tax even without a physical presence (nexus) in the state. Most major online retailers (Amazon, Walmart, etc.) now collect sales tax based on the delivery address for all 45 taxing states.
