Fixed Deposit — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the FD interest rate in 2026?+
FD interest rates vary by bank and tenure. As of 2026: SBI 3-year FD: 7.10%, HDFC 3-year: 7.40%, ICICI 3-year: 7.25%, Axis 3-year: 7.25%. Small finance banks offer up to 9%. Senior citizens typically get 0.25–0.50% additional rate. Rates change frequently — always check the bank's website before booking.
How is FD interest taxed in India?+
FD interest is taxable as "Income from Other Sources" at your income tax slab rate. If total FD interest exceeds ₹40,000 per year (₹50,000 for senior citizens), the bank deducts TDS @ 10%. You must pay additional tax if your slab rate is higher than 10%. Submit Form 15G/15H to avoid TDS if income is below taxable limit.
Quarterly vs monthly compounding — what's better?+
Quarterly compounding is standard for most bank FDs in India. Monthly compounding gives slightly higher returns (effective yield is higher). For example, 7% annual rate: monthly compounding gives effective yield of 7.229%, while quarterly gives 7.186%. The difference is small for typical FD amounts but adds up for large deposits over long tenures.
Is FD safe? What is the deposit insurance limit?+
FDs in scheduled commercial banks are insured by DICGC (Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation) up to ₹5 lakhs per depositor per bank (including both principal and interest). For amounts above ₹5 lakhs, only ₹5 lakhs is guaranteed if the bank fails. For higher safety, spread FDs across multiple banks.
Can I break FD before maturity?+
Yes, most FDs can be broken prematurely. Banks typically charge a penalty of 0.5–1% on the applicable interest rate. Tax-saver FDs (under 80C) have a mandatory 5-year lock-in and cannot be broken early. Some banks offer sweep-in FDs or flexi FDs that allow partial withdrawal without penalty.

FD Calculator India 2026 — Fixed Deposit Maturity & Interest Calculator

A Fixed Deposit (FD) is the simplest guaranteed-return investment in India. Your money grows at a fixed interest rate compounded quarterly (for most banks), and you receive the maturity amount at the end of the tenure. While FDs don't beat inflation over the long term, they are ideal for capital preservation and short-to-medium term goals.

How to Avoid TDS on FD Interest

If your total income is below the taxable limit, submit Form 15G (below 60) or Form 15H (senior citizens) to your bank at the start of each financial year. This instructs the bank not to deduct TDS. Note: submitting these forms doesn't exempt you from paying income tax — you must still include FD interest in your ITR if you earn any income.
