Take Home Salary — FAQs
What is the difference between CTC and take-home salary?+
CTC (Cost to Company) includes everything the employer pays: your gross salary + employer PF contribution + gratuity provision. Take-home salary is what you actually receive in your bank — after deducting employee PF, professional tax, income tax TDS, and any other deductions. Typically take-home is 65–80% of CTC depending on your tax slab and deductions.
How is PF deducted from salary?+
Employee PF contribution is 12% of basic salary (up to ₹15,000 basic = max ₹1,800/mo contribution under statutory rules, but many companies contribute on actual basic). Employer also contributes 12% — but this is part of CTC, not an extra cost. EPF contributions are eligible for 80C deduction.
What is professional tax?+
Professional tax is a state-level tax on employment income. It ranges from ₹200–₹2,500 per year depending on the state. Maharashtra deducts ₹200/mo (₹2,400/yr). Karnataka deducts ₹200/mo above ₹15K salary. Some states (Delhi, UP, Rajasthan) don't have professional tax. Professional tax is deductible from gross income under old regime.
How does gratuity affect my take-home?+
Gratuity is part of CTC but not paid monthly — it's paid as a lump sum when you leave after 5+ years. Gratuity = (15/26 × last basic salary × years of service). It's deducted from CTC (typically 4.81% of basic), reducing your annual gross salary. This calculator accounts for this in the CTC breakup.
Why is my take-home lower than expected in the first few months?+
Many companies front-load statutory deductions or apply annualized tax calculations from month one, meaning your actual TDS deducted early in the financial year can look higher relative to your monthly salary than it evens out to be later. Bonuses, joining incentives, and one-time reimbursements can also distort a single month's payslip — always compare your annual take-home figure, not a single month, against a calculator's projection.
Should I negotiate CTC or in-hand salary during offer discussions?+
Always clarify and negotiate based on in-hand (take-home) salary, not just the headline CTC figure. Two offers with identical CTC can differ substantially in take-home depending on how much is allocated to basic salary (which drives PF and gratuity deductions) versus allowances, and whether variable pay, ESOPs, or insurance premiums are baked into the CTC number. Ask for a detailed CTC breakup before comparing offers.
Take Home Salary Calculator — How CTC Becomes Your In-Hand Pay
The gap between your CTC (Cost to Company) and what actually lands in your bank account each month often surprises new employees. CTC includes several components that never touch your hands directly — employer PF contribution, gratuity provision, and sometimes insurance premiums — before income tax and employee-side deductions are even applied.
Worked Example: ₹12 Lakh CTC Breakdown
For a ₹12,00,000 CTC with a typical structure (₹4.8L basic, ₹2.4L HRA, ₹3.6L special allowance), after removing employer PF (₹57,600) and gratuity provision (₹23,088) from CTC, gross salary works out to roughly ₹11.19 lakh. Under the new tax regime with standard deductions and the 87A rebate, take-home typically lands around ₹85,000-90,000/month — illustrating how take-home is usually 70-85% of headline CTC depending on regime and deduction choices.
